On Thursday, March 5, 2009, we took the Lake Hodges and Kit Carson Park Trip (San Diego Bird Festival). This was a good birding trip, and we got to see some interesting species, the California Towhee being one of them. We were hiking around Kit Carson Park, located on Via Rancho Parkway in Escondido, California, when we saw this species. The California Towhee, Pipilo crissalis, is native to the coastal regions of western Oregon and California and Baja California Sur in Mexico. This species often forages quietly among chaparral bushes or garden cover and may not be readily noticed. It was a cool, partly cloudy morning with temperatures in the mid-60's.
